Dad and Son

Hey everyone! I know I have been missing from the blog for quite some time now. I came across this very touching story and would love to share it with all of you! Enjoy yea!

A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5-year old son waiting for him at the door.

SON: 'Daddy, may I ask you a question?'

DAD: 'Yeah sure, what it is?' replied the man.

SON: 'Daddy, how much do you make an hour?'

DAD: 'That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?' the man said angrily.

SON: 'I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?'

DAD: 'If you must know, I make $50 an hour.'

SON: 'Oh,' the little boy replied, with his head down.

SON: 'Daddy, may I please borrow $25?'

The father was furious, 'If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I don't work hard everyday for such childish frivolities.'

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door.

The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy's questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?

After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down , and started to think:

Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $25.00 and he really didn't ask for money very often The man went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door.

'Are you asleep, son?' He asked.

'No daddy, I'm awake,' replied the boy.

'I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier' said the man. 'It's been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you. Here's the $25 you asked for.'

The little boy sat straight up, smiling. 'Oh, thank you daddy!' he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills.

The man saw that the boy already had money, started to get angry again.

The little boy slowly counted out his money, and then looked up at his father.

'Why do you want more money if you already have some?' the father grumbled.

'Because I didn't have enough, but now I do,' the little boy replied.

'Daddy, I have $50 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you.'

The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little son, and he begged for his forgiveness.

It's just a short reminder to all of you working so hard in life. We should not let time slip through our fingers without having spent some time with those who really matter to us, those close to our hearts. Do remember to share that $50 worth of your time with someone you love.

If we die tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replace us in a matter of hours. But the family & friends we leave behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives.

Hospital ordered to pay $260,000 after removing man's single healthy testicle

A COURT has ordered a hospital in northern Italy to pay 180,000 euro ($262,716) to a man after surgeons removed a healthy testicle in error.

The plaintiff, who was 27 at the time of the operation in 2004, had a tumour in the left testicle but the healthy one was removed, the Arena di Verona newspaper reported.

The surgeons quickly realised their mistake and removed the left testicle as well, the report said.

Comment: Oh my god, I bet the guy will be so so sad over his lost. The surgeons should be alert at all times while carrying out surgery as wrong moves done are reversible. Like how can they replace another testicle for him?? Moral of the story: We should always be alert and serious while doing our work. Lets not let our carelessness affect others. =)

Heaviest Person in Thailand

A 274 kilogram woman believed to be the heaviest person in Thailand managed to leave her apartment for the first time by using a forklift and aid from Bangkok city hall.
She whom weight approximately like a grand piano weight was confined in her apartment as it was difficult to walk. Fortunately for her, she was able to walk a little just enough to go to the loo. During the process of taking her out from the apartment, she was rolled down to the corridor to a nearby empty apartment where workers had torn down an inner wall to allow her entry and demolished a section of the building's facade to take her outside. Upon seeing her neighbours cheering for her, Ms Umnuayporn smiled and flashed a "V" for victory as she was lowered from the apartment by an elevator constructed outside. A forklift then transferred her to a waiting ambulance that took her to a Bangkok hospital. She was expected to undergoes a surgery to remove a tumour in her leg and reduce her weight. Ms Umnuayporn with anticipation and tears in her eyes says that she wish to visit the beach and play with water once she heals from the surgery.

Comment: WOW! Imaging yourself weight as heavy as a grand piano? That is really scary and a wonder that one can eat so much to be so heavy. Ok..back to the topic, by reading this article, we can deduced that obesity is a matter not to be taken lightly. The ramification of being obese are detrimental to people. Relative of the obese individuals are burdened as they have to assist obese person to anywhere. Besides, the individuals themselves are restricted to go anywhere or carry out any activities as they are immobilize. Moreover, obesity leads to many other diseases such as thyroids, heart attack, high blood pressure and diabetes. To conclude, we have to take care of ourselves and not eat too much without exercising. We also have to eat healthily. Say no to obesitY! =)

Tiger cub found among stuffed toys in Bangkok luggage

The Thai national was trying to board a flight to Iran but had difficulty with a large bag at check-in.

X-rays aroused suspicions among airport staff who believed they had seen an image resembling a real animal.

Wildlife officers were then called in and discovered the tranquilised cub.

Chris Shepherd, South-East Asia deputy regional director for Traffic, said: "We applaud all the agencies that came together to uncover this brazen smuggling attempt."

But he also called for regular monitoring and harsher penalties.

"If people are trying to smuggle live tigers in their check-in luggage, they obviously think wildlife smuggling is something easy to get away with and do not fear reprimand," he said.

"Only sustained pressure on wildlife traffickers and serious penalties can change that."

Comment: It is really amusing to know that there are naive people who believe that they can get away by smuggling a tiger cub among the stuffed toy. If powdery drugs can get detected by authorities what more a living animal? I believe that one commit such crime due to desperation for money. Lesson to be learned in this article is we must always use our brain before acting. Besides, it is wrong to smuggle animals out of the countries.

Townsville forced to import sperm from US

Townsville Bulletin reported that Queensland, the city of Townsville has turned to US for sperm donation as an alternative as Australia faces shortage of sperm donation. Queensland Fertility Group used to rely on university students who are in need of cash to donate sperm. However, since the recent law implementation which sperm donors have to be contactable once the child they helped to conceive turns 18,all the donors stopped donating as they wouldn’t want to get involved with the child that they helped to conceive in 18 years time. Due to the critical shortage, IVF clinics are forced to be creative about attracting potential donors. IVF Australia launched an online advertising campaign with the tagline, “You’ve millions to spare, we only need one.”

A MAN has been jailed for 11 years for stabbing his friend to death in a fight sparked by a silly prank and jealousy

Tao Va, 29 years old man was sentenced to a minimum of eight years’ jail for stabbing his friend, Alexander at least three times at the chest. The incident all started when the latter dared another friend to shave Va’s head, which he did. When the former realised what had happened, he got into a fight with Mr Alexander and threatened to kill him. Then, the former went to the home of his ex-girlfriend Newhara Walton and accused her of having an affair with Mr Alexander. Mr Alexander then arrived at the flat and the fight was resumed. In the midst of anger and jealous, Va grabbed Alexander by his throat and stabbed him at least three times. Soon realising what he has done, Va asked Ms Walton to call an ambulance and said ‘I think I killed him’. Judge claimed that this offence is a serious manslaughter however Va showed his remorse for his action. It is believed this is offence is out of Va’s characters.

Comment: It is ok to make fun of other once awhile however every pranks or jokes have its limit. We as an adult should know when to stop a joke or prank. Besides, we should control our emotion still and not letting it loose as we like. Actions done in the midst of anger or jealousy are often regrettable which no sentence can repair.

'Sick' gang kills hundreds of kangaroos, wallabies in Tolosa Park

* Gang killing kangaroos, wallabies
* More than 100 cornered, clubbed to death

POLICE are hunting a gang of killers after the ruthless slaughter of more than 100 kangaroos and wallabies at one of Hobart's most popular parks.

Tolosa Park ranger Barry Hosking made the grisly discovery earlier this week, The Mercury reported.

"I open the gate and the crows alert me to where the carcasses are," Mr Hosking said.

"Whoever is killing the animals is doing their business under the cover of darkness. It is sick.

"There are hundreds of kangaroos in the bush here at night. But why would you want to kill them just for the sake of it?"

Glenorchy police inspector John Arnold yesterday said they were closing in on whoever has killed the marsupials near the Glenorchy tip and within Tolosa Park over the past few weeks.

"We are not ruling out the use of firearms but it is also apparent that dogs are being used to entrap the animals," Insp Arnold said.

"They are then killed or later die of capture myopathy being frightened to death."

Some of kangaroos have been clubbed to death.

Others have dog bites and some have been shot.

"We believe they are being rounded up with dogs and clubbed to death, by either a group of people or an individual with a lot of dogs," Insp Arnold said.

"It's more likely to be a group. The kangaroos are quite tame so it's easy to get within close proximity of them."

RSPCA Tasmania president Paul Swiatkowski hopes the culprits are caught soon.

"This is aggravated cruelty and serial slaughter over a period of time. Those responsible need to face justice," Dr Swiatkowski said.

Mr Hosking said the dead animals he finds are X-rayed by a vet to see if there are bullets in the carcasses.
Anyone with information about the death of the animals is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Toddler killed at train level crossing

* Two-year-old boy goes missing
* Hit and killed by freight train
* Dad finds son's body

A YOUNG family's dream of a new life in the country was shattered by the death of their two-year-old son yesterday.

And it was the boy's father who made the heartbreaking discovery of his son's body after he was hit by a freight train, 200m from their home.

The toddler was playing on railway tracks at the Nantawarra Crossing - about 12km north of Port Wakefield - when he was struck by the train, which was unable to stop in time.

Sgt Jim Tappin said the toddler wandered from the family's nearby home and is understood to have been playing on the tracks with his scooter when he was struck, just after 1pm.

Remnants of the scooter were strewn along the tracks for up to 100m.

It is understood the family - parents believed to be in their late 20s, their four-year-old daughter and the two-year-old son - had moved from Adelaide to Nantawarra late last year.

The parents were at home at the time of the accident with two grandparents and an uncle.

The boy had been playing with his sister and two young relatives when he wandered away.

"The kids were playing and when (the parents) went looking for him for lunch, they couldn't find him . . . and then they were alerted to the fact that the train had stopped," SgtTappin said.

He said the boy's father and uncle were first on the scene.

"The family, obviously, are extremely upset as is everyone else who has been here today," Sgt Tappin said.

Television Viewing #Final version

The Effects of Television Viewing

As said by Dr Thomas Alexander, television programmes are tailored to demand for continuous attention (Leigh 2001). His statement is proven to be true when American Times Use Survey (2003) reveals that men and women spent approximately 2.8 hours and 2.4 hours per day watching television respectively. Furthermore, full time workers spent majority of their time on TV, video and radio as compared to other activities (UK Time Use Survey 2000). This extensive television viewing has become a habit in our life and has raised worries among societies that this new habit of us might affect us in many ways. I strongly believe that extensive television viewing influence us in negative ways more than positive ways such as it influences the cultivation of behaviours, affects cognitive development and imposes negative impacts on health.

Excessive television viewing influences the cultivation of children’s behaviours. Research has shown that prolonged viewing of violent programmes will make children more responsive to violence. Children might form the impression that problems can be solved through violence. In addition, some poor behaviour can be attributed by imitating characters that doesn’t portray good examples. In many movies, men and women are portrayed in a specific and narrows role which leads children to think in a stereotyped way (Sharif 1991). To add on, television viewing made it difficult for children to focus on things such as homework (Leigh 2001). Children become lazier they are tempted to use their time watching television instead of doing homework (Rutherford 2002).

Moreover, extensive television viewing might contribute to poor development of children’s thinking skills. Programs like ‘Friends’ in which problems are sorted out in a short span of time encouraged children to think that problems can be solved easily (Sharif 1991). This makes children mentally weak as they become pessimistic and frustrated easily when have to deal with complex situations. Besides, imaginative skills remain undeveloped as television viewing is a passive activity. This leads to poor development of problem solving skills and organisational ability (Leigh 2001).

Lastly, watching television is a sedentary activity (Rutherford 2002). This time consuming activity eats the period set aside for exercise which is detrimental to health in terms of mentally and psychically. Lengthen periods in front of the television indicates that the children are not being physically active (Sharif 1991). The problem is made worsen when children indulge themselves with snacks during television viewing which can cause obesity and related disease (Rutherford 2002). Besides, too much exposure on television viewing deteriorates children’s communication skills. Children will become unsociable which is bad for their health as they will grow up to be passive.

Television viewing does bring positive influences in life too such as enables viewers to be refreshed and de-stressed (Rutherford 2002). However, we human tend to pick up bad habit more readily than good habits. Thus, I strongly believe television viewing brings more harms than good to us as extensive television viewing causes underdeveloped thinking skills, imposes negative impacts on health and prevents the build up for positive behaviours.

Argumentative Essay - Junk Food # Final Version

Should the sale of junk food in school canteens be banned?

Junk food is to be faulted for the increase in childhood obesity (Smith 2005). As such, suggestion for the sale of junk food to be banned in school canteens had been voiced out as a way to tackle the problem on obesity. However, there seems to be contradicting opinions in the society. Nonetheless, whatever decision that the society will choose, I strongly believe that junk food should be banned not only because it is contributing to problem of youth weight gain (Tran 2005) but it also contains minimal or no nutritional value and it contributes to litter problems.

The main reason that junk food should be banned in school canteen is because of junk food’s high contribution to the increasing childhood obesity. Obesity problem arises because children nowadays are lacked of physical activities and are made worsen as children are on high consumption on junk food which is high in fat, salt and sugar (Tran 2005). Statistic by Australian Nutrition Journal (2004) reveals that more than 50% of children consumed sugar and almost 50% of children consumed fat more than the recommended intake. By canteen tenants selling junk food, they are actually contributing to the problem of youth weight gain (Tran 2005). This is all the more reason that the sale of junk food should be banned.

Furthermore, junk food is unhealthy and contains minimal nutritional value. Most junk food commonly contains synthetic flavour enhancer, colouring, and preservative which are proven to cause behavioural problems in children as said by Smith (2005). Students are said to be hyperactive and have poor concentration in class. According to The Food Show (2005), students’ behaviour is seen to be improved tremendously after the removal of junk food in canteen. Moreover, sale of junk food is shown to be indirectly proportional to the dental health of Australia‘s primary school children (Tran 2005).

Besides, junk food is associated with litter problems. Children tend to throw the packaging on the floor rather than finding rubbish bin to throw the packaging away. This resulted more money, time and effort to be spent for cleaning which supposedly can be used to do something more productive such as spending time on maintenance projects (The Food Show 2005). With rubbish around us, our communities’ images may be tarnished as outsiders will view us as unhygienic people (Smith 2005).

To summarize, sale of junk food should be banned in school canteen as consumption of junk food brings plenty of negative consequences such as obesity problem, litter problem and behavioural problem. Undeniably, the sale of junk food generates plenty of money for school which can be used to improve school’s condition however there are other expenses incurred such as cleaning cost and dental payment making it such a way that disadvantages of junk food overrides the advantages. We have to look at the bigger picture such as the effects of consumption of junk food in future, thus sacrifices need to be made. As said by Tran (2005, p.6), “it is a small price to pay, for the future health of our nation”.

Baby 'left to die' after botched abortion

  • Baby was aborted at 22 weeks
  • Mother scared it would be disabled
  • Chaplain found it wrapped in sheet

A BABY boy who survived a botched abortion at 22 weeks was simply wrapped in cloth and left to die by Italian doctors.

The infant's mother had sought an abortion after scans revealed that the baby would likely be disabled, London's Daily Telegraph reported.

Doctors in Rossano, southern Italy, carried but the procedure however the infant survived. It's alleged that he was then wrapped in a sheet, umbilical cord still attached, and abandoned.

The infant was discovered alive on Saturday - 20 hours after the botched termination - when a hospital chaplain went to pray beside the body and noticed him moving, the Telegraph added.

The little boy died Monday in intensive care, prompting Italian police to launch a homicide investigation

The country's law states that doctors had an obligation to try to preserve the life of a child if it survives a termination.

The Italian Government is also considering an inquiry into the conduct of the hospital staff. The allegations have reignited debate on the legality of abortion in the staunchly Roman Catholic country.

It also raises questions about the legal upper limits for abortion and the ability of fetuses to survive outside of the womb.

Abortion in Italy has been available on demand since 1978 in the first three months of pregnancy but is restricted to specific circumstances, such as including disability, in the second trimester.

DNA clears New York man wrongly convicted of 1988 murder

A NEW York truck driver who spent nearly 19 years behind bars for a 1988 slaying he didn't commit has walked free after DNA testing exonerated him and instead pointed to another prison inmate.

The exonerated inmate, Frank Sterling, 46, was convicted of murder in 1992 based on a confession that he later recanted.

State Judge Thomas Van Strydonck vacated the conviction today after Monroe County prosecutors agreed with lawyers for the Innocence Project that DNA evidence obtained from the victim's clothing excluded him as the killer and pointed instead to Mark Christie, who was convicted of strangling a four-year-old girl in 1994.

Prosecutors who interviewed Christie earlier this month said he confessed to killing Viola Manville. He had been questioned about Manville's killing in 1988 but denied involvement and was discounted as a suspect.

After years of protesting his innocence, Sterling said he felt anger and relief when told he was being freed.

"Yeah, I'm mad," he said. "I'm glad he (Christie) finally did the right thing. Wish it was a little sooner."

Ms Manville, a 74-year-old grandmother, was attacked as she walked along a rural trail near her home in Hilton, a Rochester suburb, and was bludgeoned to death on November 29, 1988.

Sterling was serving 25 years to life. He confessed to the killing during an all-night interrogation in July 1991, but later claimed he had slipped into a hypnotic state and parroted details police gave him about the crime.

He unsuccessfully sought a new trial in 1997 after four former friends of Christie testified the teenager bragged about clubbing Manville with a BB gun on his walk to high school.

Christie, who is 36, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for strangling a neighbour, Kali Ann Poulton, and hiding the body for two years before he finally blurted out the truth to his new bride.

The girl vanished while riding a tricycle outside her home in a suburban Rochester townhouse complex in 1994.

Besides, junk food is associated with litter problems. Children tend to throw the packaging on the floor rather than finding rubbish bin to throw the packaging away. Resulting, more money, time and effort to be spent for cleaning which supposedly can be used to do something more productive such as spending time on maintenance projects (The Food Show 2005). Other than that, our communities’ images may be tarnished as outsiders will view us as unhygienic people (Smith 2005).

To summarize, sale of junk food should be banned in school canteen as consumption of junk food brings negative consequences to humans’ health and environment. Undeniably, the sale of junk food generates plenty of money for school which can be used to improve school’s condition however there are other expenses incurred such as cleaning cost and dental payment making it such as way that disadvantages of junk food overrides the advantages. We have to look at the bigger picture such as the effects of consumption of junk food in future, thus sacrifices need to be made. As said by Tran (2005), “it is a small price to pay, for the future health of our nation”.

Final Version of Text Production Essay

What are the potential effects of global warming in terms of climate change and how can they be arrested?
Global warming is defined as the increase in the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere. It is caused by a phenomenon known as the greenhouse effect. Indeed, natural green house effect is essential to provide warmth to the livings in Earth however since the Industrial Revolution; human activities have caused much emission of gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, which makes the atmosphere thicker. Resulting, more Sun’s heat is trapped and thus increases the Earth’s temperature (Woodford 2006). Global warming issue is something not to be taken lightly as it brings much harm in terms of climate change and the matter should be addressed immediately.

One of the obvious consequences of global warming is the dramatic rise in temperature. The scorching heat increases the melting rate of the glaciers and ice sheets, thus increases the sea level. Example of this phenomenon is the drastic warming of North and South Poles. Ice at North Pole is predicted to vanish completely due to the intense heat during summer by year 2100. When this occurs, places on low lying nation such as Florida, California, or Bangladesh will be completely inundated in seawater (Woodford 2006). Furthermore, the increase in atmosphere temperature warms up the ocean and subsequently causes stronger storms which affect many countries as mentioned by the main character in ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ (2007).

Besides, global warming causes erratic weather changes. According to Riebeek (2007), the earth is likely to experience more intense drought and more intense rain events due to warm temperatures that altered the weather patterns. The film, 'An Inconvenient Truth' (2007) supported the statement by saying vaporization from the ocean increases the humidity in the sky and when the storm condition initiated the rain, more rainfalls produced. This leads to flood at many countries such as Asia, Mumbai, India and China. At the same time the countries being flooded, the neighbouring countries suffering severe drought. Lake Chad, one of the largest lakes in the world dried up due to the severe drought.

In addition, global warming altered the natural ecosystem. Drastic changes in weathers have put animals and plants in peril as they are unable to adjust themselves accordingly to the weather in a short period. For example, parts of coral reefs are killed due to the heating of the ocean (Woodford 2006). Polar bears who depend on the ice, found drown because unable to find ice to take shelter. Moreover, global warming increases the outbreak of vectors for emerging infectious diseases such as SARS and tuberculosis because the temperature is favourable to the vectors said in the film, ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ (2007).

To put a stop into all these problems, many actions can be taken. Firstly, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by using more efficient electricity appliances or try walking, cycling, take bus instead of using car. (Woodford 2006). The film 'An Inconvenient Truth' (2007), the main character suggested the use of high mileage vehicles, switching utilities to renewable energy sources and usage of carbon-capture-and-storage technologies will be able to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emissions as low as the emissions in 1970s. Lastly, all countries should rectify Kyoto Protocol treaty and take own initiatives in reducing carbon dioxide.

In conclusion, global warming issue is something not to be taken lightly because the consequences of it are too high prices for us to pay. Stop sweeping the matter under the carpet and let it accumulates; it is time for us to open up the carpet and face what is underneath the carpet. We human have the abilities to solve any problems if we put our heart into it. The film ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ (2007) summarized the sentence perfectly by saying ‘the solutions are in our hands, we just have to have the determination to make them happen.’
